Southern Utah (after OR) Day 1, August 2015

Usual plan for early August is make it through Outdoor Retailer then grab a rental and get out of town to explore some of Utahs hidden geographic gems. This year took me through San Rafael Swell which turned out to be pretty epic. Its mostly all BLM land but that doesnt mean its not spectacular- it totally measures up to the usual Utah landscape standard which always leaves me breathless. Drove down to Castle Dale then through The Swell on dirt roads (sorry rental place!), then on to Goblin Valley State Park and out to Green River. Apparently everyone else and their dog wanted to be in this area too as every hotel in Green River was full, same with Moab and Grand Junction. Managed to grab one of the last two rooms at a just OK motel…
